HP ProBook 5310m preview

The HP ProBook 5310m packs an impressive set of hardware for a laptop this thin and light. Unlike netbooks and other slim notebooks, this computer doesn’t sacrifice processing power in lieu of design or portability and rightfully claims the title of “the world’s thinnest full-performance notebook.”The base model of the notebook is equipped with a 2 megapixel webcam, a 160GB hard drive, and 1GB of DDR3 RAM. The notebook comes with Vista, but can be downgraded to Window XP and will be eligible for a free Windows 7 upgrade on October 22nd. The ProBook 5310m starts at $699- a very reasonable price point for a well equipped sleek machine.

New Samsung X Series Laptop – 14″ Thinnest Samsung yet

Samsung X Series is also launching today. The X420 (14-inch), X520 (14.6-inch) and X120 (11.6-inch, pictured) all hover around 0.95-inches thick, and range from 3 ounces to 4.4 pounds in weight. Samsung is touting its new design language for the laptops, though at a glance it doesn’t seem too special — the scratch-resistant UV coating for the glossy finish is a nice touch, though. Under the hood we’re a little short on details, but an unannounced dual-core Intel CULV processor makes an appearance somewhere in there. Otherwise there’s the fairly standard WiFi, Bluetooth, card reader, and HDMI plug. Samsung claims some special mojo to squeeze 9 hours of battery out of its 6 cell batteries (in the X420 and X520, the X120 does 4 cell), with 6 hours of movie playback also claimed — we’ll believe it when we see it, but we want to believe. Sony Ericsson Satio – 12.1 MP Mobile Phone from Sony

The Sony Ericsson Satio is here and is it looks like it could be a real leading light in the movement of next generation mobile phones. Robot in disguise? No, but the Satio is certainly a prime example of a top class transformer, mobile phone by day, 12-mega-pixel camera by night! Now I’m sure that grabs the attention, but the question is does the Satio’s design and technological capabilities carry the same kind of impact?

The Satio’s design makes it instantly recognisable as a Sony Ericsson handset due to its uncanny resemblance to its predecessor, the Sony Ericsson C905. Those of you familiar with the C905 will deduce that the Satio is a peculiar beast with a curvaceous, yet cutting exterior. In the hand, it really does have a feel of quality and it’s sturdiness does offer some comfort to those of us who have been called ‘butter-fingers’, on more than one occasion. The jet black colour determines that it is fairly neutral and wouldn’t look out of place in anyone’s company while the mirrored finish to the screen is a nice touch that shows Sony Ericsson were committed to producing a final product that succeed in aesthetical quality.

There is no doubt that the 12-mega-pixel camera is the standout feature in the Sony Ericsson Satio’s repertoire. It really is an outstanding facility so instead of me boring you with my ramblings about how good I think it is; I thought I’d just give you the facts. Read the rest of this entry »

Sony Vaio X Series – New Thin notebook from Sony

Move over, MacBook Air. Although Dell already ripped up Apple’s envelope with the thinner-than-Air Adamo, Sony has set its own sights on the King of Thin, and the resulting Vaio X Series should put both imitator and imitated to shame.

Sony teased the Vaio X at this year’s IFA conference in Berlin, which essentially functions as the European version of CES. With no spec sheet or press release to be found, all we know are the bare essentials from Sony’s press conference: the screen spans 11.1 inches, the whole laptop measures only 0.55 inches thick (compared to 0.76 inches on the Air), and Sony has wrapped it in so much carbon fiber that its total weight comes to only 1.5 pounds. That’s just a smidge heavier than the almost-pocketable and highly flippable 1.4-pound Vaio P. Read the rest of this entry »

Dell Studio XPS 13 – Review of the Dell Studio XPS 13

Like its predecessor the XPS M1330, the XPS 13 has a wedge shape that’s both good-looking and easy to carry. However, at 4.8 pounds (versus 4 pounds), it’s nearly a full pound heavier. The black lid has a classy gloss finish that picks up fingerprints easily. On one end is a metal strip that separates the plastic from a patch of black leather, which is easily the most luxurious detail
